The next big thing in cloud computing? Shh… It’s confidential – Help Net Security

Some are suspicious of cloud services. I’ve heard clients say that they don’t want their data on the cloud because it’s not secure or they don’t want others to be able to see their data or their data is safer on their own server. For most companies, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Many on-premises servers and computers are not secure due to lack of knowledge, lack of money, or other factors that keep local computers poorly protected.

By contrast, the cloud service providers are able to pay top dollar for people and technology to stay on the edge of best practices security. These providers are able to leverage the number of clients that they support to reduce the cost to each client for the best security options available. An article that I recently read makes the argument that “(f)or some time, the public cloud has actually been able to offer more protection than traditional on-site environments.” There are some risks associated with cloud that are higher than on-premise servers such as the insider threat that the article also mentions.

Some of the newest technologies that are coming out are mitigating those issues. The article goes on to outline some of those technologies and how they are able to secure data in new ways making the protection undistinguishable from the data itself. True cloud security protects the data through its entire life cycle; during transfers, while processing and while it’s “at rest” (stored for future access).
